The Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino Wines is Always There for You

Founded in 1967 following the recognition of the DOC, the Consorzio di tutela del Vino Brunello di Montalcino (the Consortium for the Protection of Brunello di Montalcino Wine)  brings together 212 members, representing 98.2% of Brunello production,  for a protection that extends over 3,500 hectares of vineyards in the district of the Municipality of Montalcino.

Among the denomination wines of the area, the Brunello di Montalcino, the first red DOC of the Belpaese, excels, followed by the Doc Rosso di Montalcino, Moscadello di Montalcino and Sant'Antimo.  Since June 2019 the presidency of the consortium has been entrusted to Fabrizio Bindocci, now joined by Michele Fontana, and a Board of Directors made up of 15 members representing the entire supply chain.  The objective is to establish one of the richest farming communities in the world and one of the most honourable at national level, with half of its economy made of agricultural businesses. This is an ecosystem driven above all by wine, and in particular by Brunello, which has always seen the Consortium committed to the quality and growth of the Montalcino brand.

The Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino’s Connection with the World

There are about 3,500 hectares of vineyards, 2,100 of which are registered for the DOCG for Brunello, 510 for Rosso di Montalcino, 60 for Moscadello and 480 for Sant'Antimo. It is a unique territory in terms of biodiversity, morphological and climatic characteristics, covered 50% by woodland, 10% by olive groves and only 15% by vineyards, with the remaining area being arable land, pastures and other crops. The climate, which is Mediterranean and mainly mild, ensures optimal ripening and continuous ventilation for the grapes.  It is a perfect microcosm, in which the wine and the Brunello brand, together with the Unesco Heritage of the Val d'Orcia, contribute immensely towards extremely varied opportunities for tourism which are greatly appreciated by both national and international visitors.  Among the attractions are quality agricultural products such as saffron, honey, olive oil, cheese and truffles, as well as opportunities for historical and cultural study and the possibility to carry out outdoor activities such as trekking, horseback riding and e-bike tours.

The Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino’s Role in Spreading the Brunello Word

From the unmistakable refinement of Brunello to the elegance of Rosso di Montalcino, from the traditions safeguarded by the Moscadello label to the important historical symbol represented by Sant'Antimo. DOCG or DOC, the wines protected by the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino are all the result of deep knowledge and the expression of the land which is unique for its  biodiversity, morphological and climatic characteristics.  King of the vineyard is the Sangiovese, which is the base of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. In the former, it reveals excellent ageing potential and complexity, while in the latter, it demonstrates a great ability to produce younger and slimmer wines. The white Muscat is instead the reference variety for Moscadello, the oldest wine of the area, available in Tranquillo, Frizzante and Vendemmia Tardiva versions.  Finally, there is the great versatility of Sant'Antimo, which also includes the use of international vines and different types.
