Today, is Panna Cotta day! Simple, iconic, and known (as well as copied) all over the world, Italian panna cotta is definitely a dessert staple!

Panna Cotta (Cooked Cream) is an Italian dessert invented around the late 1800, and although it is said to be a Piedmontese sweet dish, its origins are quite a mistery.

Easily prepared in advance (panna cotta happily sits in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours), panna cotta is made with only 4 ingredients, and is incredibly easy to make!

Preparation

for 4 servings

Step

1

Of 4

Prepare the panna cotta base

Pour the whipping cream into medium sauce pan, and add sugar.

Place the gelatin in a bowl with cold water and allow to soak until softened.

Step

2

Of 4

Add the vanilla

Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise, remove the seeds by scraping inside the bean with a sharp knife.

Place the removed insides of the bean directly in the whipping cream.

Add the entire vanilla bean into the whipping cream, and turn on the heat.

Over medium heat, continue to stir the cream and bring to boiling.

Step

3

Of 4

Cook the panna cotta

As soon as the boiling point has been reached, remove from heat.

Remove gelatin from the water, squeeze out excess liquid, and add to the heated whipping cream.

Stir well with a wooden spoon in order to blend the ingredients thoroughly.

Using a fine strainer, strain the whipping cream in order to remove the vanilla bean and any lumps from the gelatin.

Step

4

Of 4

Complete the dish

Pour the cream into ramekins or pudding dishes or glasses that have been run under cold water.  This small step will allow for easier removal from the container when you serve the panna cotta.   Allow to cool to room temperature, then place in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours prior to serving.

Serve cold.  You can also add a fresh fruit compote, caramel or chocolate syrup on top to make the dessert sweeter.
