The estate was born in 1981 from the intuition of Gianni Masciarelli, a charismatic character, pioneer of the rebirth of Abruzzo viticulture and the new national wine scene. He also succeeded in making the two most significant grape varieties of the region, Trebbiano and Montepulciano, excellences known throughout the world. Combining rural tradition and the enhancement of indigenous grape varieties, Masciarelli has proven how local values can reach the world through wine. The official inauguration took place in 2000 when the 1995 vintage of Villa Gemma Montepulciano became Best Wine of Italy for the Gambero Rosso/Arcigola Guide - the first time ever for a Montepulciano - while in 2004 the winery was awarded Best Wine of Italy. In the same years, numerous national and international awards followed one another in the form of a unique experience, a way of conceiving wine and work in the vineyard that has become an unavoidable benchmark for many other wineries. Since 2008 the company has been led by Marina Cvetic Masciarelli, former Sales Director, who has particularly contributed to the development of foreign markets, to the growth and internationalization of the company and to the affirmation of a fully managerial culture within the company, joined today by her daughter Miriam Lee Masciarelli, Brand Ambassador. Many other innovations have been introduced in recent years in a wide range of sectors - from winemaking to the development of new product lines - always maintaining the standards of quality, excellence and honesty desired by Gianni Masciarelli. The beating heart of the company is San Martino sulla Marrucina, in the province of Chieti, where the main winery is located. It can be visited by appointment. However, it is at the Castello di Semivicoli that you can fully enjoy the Masciarelli experience: a 17th century baronial palace, purchased and transformed by the Masciarelli family into a charming wine resort, it is now an essential point of reference for regional wine tourism, home to original cultural and food and wine events, stays dedicated to idleness and the discovery of the territory, tailor-made fairytale weddings
From the initial 2.5 hectares of vineyards in the province of Chieti, Tenute Agricole Masciarelli has acquired over 60 plots in all 4 provinces of Abruzzo (Chieti, Teramo, Pescara, L'Aquila), fully expressing the extraordinary richness in biodiversity and terroir of the region. The territory of Abruzzo is in fact very varied, a rugged and sometimes wild landscape that degrades from the mountains to the hills, descending gently to the sea. It is here that Gianni Masciarelli dedicated himself to cultivating vines to produce wines of the highest level, together with his wife Marina Cvetic, to whom he has dedicated some of his most important labels. Masciarelli has enhanced and promoted native grape varieties and the agricultural landscape, helping to make Montepulciano and Abruzzo part of the world map of viticulture of excellence. In addition to Montepulciano and Trebbiano, within the heritage of the company there are also small excellent productions of international grape varieties that have conquered interesting niche markets in Italy and abroad: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay Marina Cvetic. The extraordinary variety of terroir makes it possible to obtain a unique reading of the various grape varieties and to interpret the regional territory
Faithful to the ideal of uncompromising quality, year after year Masciarelli's products have won the trust of experts in the field as well as a large number of enthusiasts and admirers, who have made some of its labels' wines. Masciarelli has adopted a quality code based on high planting densities, parcel harvesting, low yields per hectare and long aging. Today, Masciarelli has 22 labels and 6 product lines, from the classic Montepulciano, Cerasuolo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo in ready-to-drink versions, to the most sophisticated premium lines. The annual production is about 2 million bottles distributed in 44 countries all over the world; 40% of the annual turnover comes from abroad. The flagship wine of Casa Masciarelli, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Villa Gemma, was the first Montepulciano ever to become the Best Wine of Italy for Gambero Rosso and has been at the top of the charts and guides for over three decades. Masciarelli Tenute Agricole is one of the very few Italian wineries to have seen its wines awarded as many as 30 'Three glasses' ;by Gambero Rosso and has been constantly selected in recent years by Wine Spectator as one of 100 Great Italian Wineries (in which we participated again this year)
Unquestionably Masciarelli's most famous label, dedicated to his beloved wife who changed his life.
